THE NOVEL

WHAT ARE THE CANCELLED CHAPTERS?

Jane Austen rewrote the ending of Persuasion several days after she had finished, feeling that the original ending was "tame and flat." The cancelled chapters may be found at Jane Info. Nick Dear made use of a part of these cancelled chapters in his screenplay for Persuasion2.

IS MRS. CLAY WIDOWED OR DIVORCED?

She is a widow. In Chapter 17, we have this: [Anne] made no reply. She left him to himself to recollect, that Mrs Smith was not the only widow in Bath between thirty and forty, with little to live on and no surname of dignity.

WHY DO THE DOWAGER VISCOUNTESS DALRYMPLE AND HER DAUGHTER, MISS CARTERET HAVE DIFFERENT LAST NAMES?

Carteret is the family name, Darymple is the name of the family's title (as in Viscount Darymple, Duke of Earl, etc.) The use of "Dowager" before her title tells us that her husband is deceased and that the current Viscount is married. His wife now holds the title "Viscountess Darymple."

WHAT IS THE FAMILY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SIR WALTER ELLIOT AND MR. ELLIOT?

Sir Walter had written into The Book of Books: "Heir presumptive, William Walter Elliot, Esq., great grandson of the second Sir Walter." Dr. R. W. Chapman in his notes to the Oxford edition of Persuasion states that Mr. Elliot is Sir Walter's nephew.

WHAT DOES "RETRENCH' MEAN?

"To cut down, reduce, pare away, specifically economically." Webster's Ninth Collegiate Dictionary.

WHAT IS THIS ACTION OFF ST. DOMINGO WHERE CAPT. WENTWORTH WAS MADE A COMMANDER DIRECTLY PRIOR TO HIS AND ANNE'S FIRST MEETING IN 1806?

During this period the island of Hispaniola (St. Domingo/Haiti) was being fought over by the Spanish, French, and English--and the people that lived there also revolted against colonial rule.

WHO ARE EMMA AND HENRY?

From Chapter 12: "Without emulating the feelings of an Emma towards her Henry, she [Anne] would have attended on Louisa with a zeal above the common claims of regard, for his sake; and she hoped he would not long be so unjust as to suppose she would shrink unnecessarily from the office of a friend."

The reference is to Matthew Prior's Henry and Emma, in which Emma expresses abject willingness to serve the non-existent rival with whom her Henry pretends to be in love in order to test her.

WHAT IS THE PUMP ROOM?

Built in 1704 over the ancient Roman baths, the Pump Room was originally a place for invalids to come and drink the waters from a covered pump. During Jane Austen's time, it had become a place to socialize. This link to Bathweb gives you some details about Bath and it's history.

HAVE ANY SEQUELS TO PERSUASION BEEN PUBLISHED?

There have been a couple. You will find information and reviews at Linda's Sequels Page. There are quite a few Persuasion stories written by Pemberley citizens which may be found at Bits of Ivory.

WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE ON THE VIDEO COVER?

Persuasion 2 has been released on video with four covers, two in Europe and two in the US, including the infamous Nibbler Cover. See all of them here

WHY ARE SOME NAMES CHANGED IN THE MOVIE?

In his screenplay, Nick Dear changed Fanny Harville's name to Phoebe. We're not sure why this is, unless he wished to avoid what many consider to be a derogatory name. Charles Hayter also becomes Henry Hayter to avoid confusion with Charles Musgrove.

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THAT WHEN ANNE GOES TO VISIT MRS. SMITH AND DISCOVERS THAT MR. ELLIOT IS NOT WHAT HE PRETENDS TO BE, SHE ENTERS WITH A PINK DRESS AND EXISTS WITH A WHITE/BLUE ONE?

Yes, we have. Though some have searched for some deeper meaning and even put forth The Alien Abduction Theory to explain the changing dress color, most of us are content to believe that person in charge of continuity in the film was napping that day.

MUSIC IN PERSUASION 2

Soundtrack: Unfortunately, there is no soundtrack to Persuasion 2. The credits at the end of the movie lists these pieces of classical music as being used in the movie:
Chopin, Prelude in G
Chopin, Prelude in B
Chopin, Nocturne in B
JS Bach, Sarabande in D (French Suite)
JS Bach, Sarabande in B (French Suite)
This cd has very nice renditions of the
Chopin Preludes which are used in the film.

Piano Sheet Music: Faber has published a book of piano music called "Jane Austen's World" (ISBN 0 571 51793 5) including music from four of the recent adaptations: P2, P&P2, S&S2 and Emma2. The Persuasion selections are "Main Theme", "Tristesse", and "Italian Aria." Here is a link to the piano book at sheetmusicplus.com

The Italian arias: These were written for the movie by the composer Jeremy Sams. One of our citizens, Tiffany Adams who like Anne does not profess to be an Italian Scholar, offered this translation to the first aria (unfortunately the second one was too garbled to understand):

Oh il mio tesoro Oh my treasure
Siamo al fin insieme We are finally together
O gioia in espirata Oh what joy in ecstacy
Addio, Addio, al mio dolor Goodbye to my pain and suffering
Ah che gioia in questa core! Ah what joy in this heart!
al fino ao fin il mio tesoro to the end my treasure
Siamo insieme il mio tesoro! AH! we are together my treasure! Ah!

WHAT IS ROCKY HORROR P2?

Our Mags has written (with some input from other citizens) a most excellent audience participation Persuasion 2 movie script (a la The Rocky Horror Picture Show.) Brew a pot of tea and check it out.

Please note this is on backorder status which means it is hard to find or may now be out of print. Some people have had luck finding the screenplay at Jane Austen Books in Chicago.
